Why I write under a pen name and why I wrote THE PAGE TURNER (4/8), how I handle bad reviews, how to preorder my new novel & announcing my 10-state, 30-event book tour (PLEASE come see me)!
It was wonderful meeting you guys last night at Doylestown!! I’m reading The Page Turner. Fabulous book!! Makes me think even more that you should write a self-help book or a book of quotes from GiGi and Wade!! Your words are so uplifting!! Love, Dolly
I will be coming to see you at Doylestown Bookshop with my 2 daughters. We are so excited to meet you!! Love your books so much!! They remind me of my grandmom and my mom. So happy that you get to honor your grandmother by using her name!! See you soon!!
When I realized you had a pen name, I thought “Oh, that’s cool”. No judgement here! You have been an admired author of mine for years.
Our library has an event around Valentines Day called “Blind Date with a Book”. Different genres are chosen then wrapped up in plain brown paper with just a three word snippet of what the book is about. I’ve participated in this for 3-4 years now & only once I took a book back since I couldn’t get into it. It forces me to discover new authors however, I always stay with my favorites like you!
Keep doing what you do. I read a book about an author & how difficult writing is and it’s intense what you go through. You have a supportive life partner which is a treasure.
One question, I thought as a child you stayed in northern Michigan in the summer?
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your essay. I believe I did know that you named yourself after your grandmother but did not know the details.
Any chance you might come to Vancouver at some point?
First of all, know that I am really looking forward to reading The Page Turner! Yes, I did know the story of why you chose the pen name of Viola Shipman (and I love that story) but it struck a new chord for me this time. My mom passed away early February and she was a woman much like your grandma it sounds like. To see all the people who braved the 7 degree weather in Minnesota on the day of her funeral touched me deeply. So your quote, "My grandma was overlooked in society because she didn’t offer anything of “value.” But look at the legacy she left – one that will live forever – simply by being selfless and loving." reminded me that my mom's legacy, much like your grandmother's, did indeed touch people and she will live one. Your writing is so relatable and touching, Wade. Keep up the good work!
